Over the decades we have a distinguished record in speaking out on behalf of the people of Northern Ireland, campaigning for improved treatments and more rapid access to them. This has played a very considerable part in reducing the number of heart deaths in people under 75–years of age by 71% in the last 20 years.
Over many years NICHS has campaigned to reduce the waiting time for cardiac surgery and other similar procedures. We have strongly urged eliminating any delay in making available new treatments.
We have been successful in persuading the Health Trusts to establish a Stroke Unit in every general hospital in Northern Ireland. This will greatly enhance the recovery of patients and will reduce the numbers who may die, or who have to live in long–term residential ccommodation.
We were at the forefront in campaigning for smoke–free environments. We continue to campaign that patients and carers are given full information about their condition and have a say in their management.
Our current campaigns includes:
Check Your Lungs Campaign
Cardiac Rehab Campaign
Stroke Awareness Week
FAST Campaign
